From www.autopareri.com:
That's a wonderful FIAT 500 "Topolino" Trasformabile (convertible), probably the first popular tiny car ever built. "Topolino" was the funny nickname the italian people gave to the car, and means literally "little mouse".
It has been produced in 3 different versions, from 1936 till 1955; I think that Irving's one is an "A" version (1936-'48). Four cylinders, RWD, 16.5hp. "500" stands for the engine displacement, expressed in cubic centimeters: just half a litre. The maximun speed written on the speedometer was 100 km/ora (about 60 MPH): once grandpa pushed that car so fast that the speedometer needle reached the "r" of "km/ora"!!!
In Italy it is quite a myth, because it has been the first car for many families, even before the most important italian popular myth, the "FIAT Nuova 500" (1955-70s).
In the same years (40s-50s-60s) the Vespa, built by Piaggio, was having a massive success. It was a simple, easy-to-use vehicle, just perfect for urban travels. Vespa is an italian name for a type of bees, to recall the vehicle's agility. [Or, the sound made by its engine!]
As of July 2010 I can't find the page from which I cribbed the above online. But I have found an excellent source at www.imcdb.org that confirms it. The new source adds the model number of Irving's car as "1948 Fiat 500 B," and the Vespa as "1951 Piaggio Vespa 125."
