06-01(x)

Movie Location: via Margutta 51

Filming Location: Piazza dell'Orologio

View to: East

Object or Scene: Torre dell'Orologio

Atop the Monastery or Oratorio dei Filippini (San Filippo Neri). The large dome in the background is Sant'Agnese in Agone, on Piazza Navona.

In the movie, the tower is shown and the soundtrack is of its bells ringing noon. The bells awaken Joe, who realizes he's overslept, then jumps out of bed and runs to look out his window. The tower is shown again, implying he sees it from his window. Certainly not, as the tower is all the way across the downtown.

Object or Scene: Fountain of the Piazza Colonna.

The view from Mr. Hennessey’s office. This location is unmistakable. But...

06-02-3

Movie Location: Galleria Colonna, now Galleria Alberto Sordi, via del Corso

Filming Location: Cinecittą?

View to: West

Object or Scene: The Marcus Aurelius column out the window.

(Not mapped)

The office is made to appear to overlook the Piazza Colonna.

Across the via del Corso from the Piazza Colonna is Galleria Alberto Sordi, formerly Galleria Colonna. The window frames on the Galleria are too elaborate to match those on the shot 06-02-1.

The office interior shown in 06-02-1 matches the other shots inside the office. So the shot through the window, and all the other office senes, were one place. I assume the filming location is Cinecittą, on a set with window dressing made to look like we’re seeing the Piazza Colonna through the window.

I have no Daily Report to confirm this, thus the Location is unmapped.

It's interesting that the art directors took the trouble to match the view out the window with the locating shot of 06-02-2. Or for that matter, to "locate" the office at all. Who watching the movie would have known or cared about the office location? But all the details match up.

A slightly different perspective on "Piazza Colonna."

Object or Scene: Pinups.

There are also shots in an office room supposedly between this and Mr. Hennessey’s office.

06-03

Movie Location: via Margutta 51

Filming Location: Cinecittą?

View to: Unknown

Object or Scene: Giovanni’s office.

(Not mapped)

Picture 06-07-12 implies this office is behind the balustrade over the top of the tunnel.

Note however the solid doors. Then see 06-10 on the next page. No match, so I assume this little room is not actually behind the balcony at via Margutta 51. And given the number of scenes whose Daily Reports list Cinecittą as Location, this probably is, too. But I can't confirm it.

One Daily Report lists Cinecittą as the location for the terrace. All the terrace shots seem to be at via Margutta. Could the Report have meant this window scene?

06-05-2(x)

Movie Location: via Margutta 51

Filming Location: Via Quattro Novembre

View to: North

Object or Scene: South end of via della Pilotta

Supposed view from window shown in 06-05-1. An irony: the corner on the left is part of Palazzo Colonna. Why this location was chosen as the view from Joe’s window is another small mystery.
