The movie cuts from the previous to this shot with no interruption, implying continuity. But, note the lack of nameplate on the door Joe's holding open in this shot, and the presence of a nameplate on the door in the previous. Clue Number Three.

In this larger version of the picture above, see the doorway behind Joe? It's pretty obvious this terrace does not lead directly into an apartment, being Clue Number Four, and the last in a series that seems to me to prove that Joe's apartment must have been a Cinecitta studio. And indeed...

Darn! I've wanted to stay in Joe's apartment ever since we first saw the movie. Alas, it never was at #51. But there is enough documentation of the exteriors to allow us to use the address for our movie tour reconstruction.
As we saw, John MacDonald has pointed out that the Spiral Stair might itself be a set. I think the window view and the Daily Report confirm the apartment. What the discontinuity of the door means, only time will tell.

There are several pages online with pictures of this balcony at the top of the tunnel stairs. So its presence at #51 is confirmed.
Note though the doors, with their windows covered in wrought iron. Giovanni’s office seen in 06-03 couldn't have been behind these doors.

Now the city tour begins!
On our last trip to Rome, we tried to get a look through this door several times. As of November 2009, the exterior was scaffolded and the door was always closed.
So we never did get to identify 06-05. Perhaps next time!
