Puff the Magic Dragon

With Apologies and Gratitude to Lenny Linton and Peter Yarrow.

Chorus:
Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea,
And froliced in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh!

Chorus (twice)

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail.
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail.
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came.
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name. Oh!

Chorus (twice)

A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys.
Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys.
One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more,
And Puff the mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.
His head was hung in sorrow, green scales fell like rain.
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave.
So Puff the magic dargon sadly slipped into his cave. Oh!

Chorus (twice)

The new verses:

A dragon lives forever, and Puff kept on for years
Of days and nights of sad afrights and glistening dragon tears.
'Til a day dawned bright and golden, with a sky like a Magritte,
And Puff heard Jackie Paper say, "Here's someone you should meet."
A lad stood there between them, his face ablaze with joy.
Jackie smiled at Puff and said, "Old friend, this is my boy.
"Now you two braves be careful, fighting pirates is no lark."
And as he turned to go he called, "Puff. . . have him home by dark."

Chorus (note change to present tense)
Puff the Magic Dragon lives by the sea,
And frolics in the autumn mists in a land called Honah Lee.
Oh, Puff the Magic Dragon lives by the sea,
   And frolics in the autumn mists in a land. . . called. . . Hon. . . ah. . . Lee.
